MEET MOLLY!

I interrupt my regularly scheduled day of art appreciation and inspiration to introduce you all to the newest member of Matt and I's family, Molly. We've been thinking about adopting a dog, especially a pit bull, for awhile now and Molly just wiggled her way into our hearts.

Here's Molly's story: Last month Molly was found as a stray and picked up by Animal Care & Control. That's where we saw her for the first time. When we walked into her room with just a long row of kennels and barking dogs, there she was, with her eyes wide and her tail wagging happy to see up but not barking like the others. We asked to take her outside to play a bit and she waited at the door patiently ready for some fresh air and exercise.

Outside they have this little stand with big letters that say "ADOPT ME" set up to take photos of the pets for sites like petfinder, Molly (named Francis by the Pound) bounded right over to it and sat down. "Adopt me, please," she seemed to say. We really wanted to adopt her right then but Matt and I still weren't sure if we were ready. We still hadn't gotten the pet rider from our landlord and we had no doggy stuff, so we left Molly there. In hindsight, we should have adopted her right away.

Yesterday, Matt and I decided to pull the trigger and just adopt. Molly was still on our minds so we decided that this weekend we would go get her. Little did I know how that is an eternity for a dog at AC&C. I was reading the blog Passion for Pits by another pit lover in NYC and she highlighted some of the terrible practices of the AC&C in Harlem, the very shelter that Molly was at. When we met Molly, she had kennel cough. It's common at nearly every shelter I've ever visited and totally curable. Thanks to Passion for Pits I found out that AC&C has a reputation for putting down dogs with kennel cough.

My heart dropped. I rushed over to the shelter as fast as I could. When I got there I couldn't find Molly in the adoptable dog kennels and had to go downstairs to find out if she was just adopted, in the sick area or something worse. Its was really long wait. Not just because there workers there are incredibly inefficient but I was really stressed out. How could we have been such idiots to think she would be there when we got back? That the city would care about "just another stray pit bull" no matter how sweet she was?

Finally I was called up to find that Molly was still there. She had a bad case of kennel cough and was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. "Do you still want her?" the lady asked.

"You betcha," I said. What came next was a lot of paperwork and waiting. I was helped through the process by a girl about my age who said she was still pretty new there. She had an enthusiasm that the others lacked. After about 3 hours Molly came bursting through the door, tail wagging like crazy. She looked at me like she knew what just happened and she thanked me with some very sweet kisses. We still didn't know what to name her. The AC&C called her Francis but we weren't in love with that name and it didn't really fit her. There was a little boy in the waiting room who pet Molly on the head and said "She's so pretty. What's her name?"

"I don't know," I replied, "What do you think I should I name her?"

He thought for a bit and then just before I left the shelter he shouted, "You should name her Molly!"

Last night was crazy with our new pup. I'm pretty sure she wags her tail in her sleep. We gave her a bath and some quality snuggle time. Neither Matt or I got much sleep because we were so excited and every time Matt would look at Molly on her bed she would pop her head up, wag her tail and want to jump into bed with us.

We are crazy lucky to have gotten to the kennel when we did and we are just so happy and blessed to have Molly in our lives now. Let the dog owning adventures begin!

There is a freedom and energy to illustrations of Charmaine Olivia. This San Francisco artist has a raw confidence that allows her creations to have this stunning immediacy that gives me the jolt I need this Monday. Charmaine other works are very realistic, full of dark and lovely imagery but it is undoubtedly a painstaking process. These illustrations just look as though she is letting it go a bit and the results are beautiful.

Something that seems fun and excited but I haven't really thought about before is textile design. It's an art form that gets so intertwined with everyday life that one could argue it has more power than the art on the wall. Lourdes "Luli" Sanchez works in a way that is similar to me, with watercolors and a bit of controlled mayhem, but she designs for fabrics and textiles. Not to mention her work is absolutely gorgeous. Simple but arresting.

XEROX IMAGE TRANSFER TUTORIAL

I promised to share a DIY on the image transfer technique I used for my Sketchbook Project, and now that my sketchbook is finished and on its way to the Art House CoOp, I thought now would be a great time. This a great technique that you can use for photographs or printed digital images.

YOU WILL NEED:

Q-tips
Spoon, baren or burnisher
Paper, canvas or wood to transfer to
Xerox copy of image -not inkjet, you need an old school copy with lots of toner.
Wintergreen oil

NOTE: Although wintergreen oil smells fantastic in small doses it is toxic so be sure to work in a well ventilated space, avoid direct contact with skin and (don't think I should have to say this but) don't eat it. The reason I use q-tips is because it keeps the oil away from my hands, but you are welcome to be extra save and wear gloves. Also, even though you cannot see it, my windows are open wide, even in the middle of winter to allow proper ventilation. Don't let that woody smell fool you.

STEP 1:

Take your photocopied image and place it face down on your surface. Paper really works the best for this technique but I've seen it look awesome on wood or cloth as well. I used painter's tape to secure the top of copy to the transfer surface to prevent the paper from moving around during STEP 3. If you have words in your photograph remember that the end result will be a mirror image of the original so adjust all text accordingly.

STEP 2:

Wet Q-tip in wintergreen oil and apply liberally over image as shown below. The paper will absorb oil a bit so its difficult to get a lot of precision, instead you get a beautiful hazy halo around things that gives it a ethereal feeling. Remember to avoid contact with your skin.

STEP 3:

This part requires a bit of patience and elbow-grease. Holding your copied image so that it doesn't move around burnish the oiled part of your image with the spoon or baren. Rub really hard and evenly to insure an even transfer. Carefully check your transfer, making sure to put it back in the exact same place. Don't want no double images here. You can reapply the wintergreen oil and continue rubbing if you want the transfer to be darker/sharper.

Now that you are done you may notice an oil spot around your image, don't worry. It will dry. You can reuse the same xerox copied image for a "ghost" image if you like. It will be lighter and less defined but it's a cool effect on its own. For my Sketchbook I doodled in pen over the transferred images and it turned out very nicely. Let your creativity run loose.

Yes, I realize I talk about the weather and changing seasons a lot on here but its just part of my inspiration. Weather is something everyone can relate to. Plus I am always fascinated by it and its unpredictability. Over the last week I've experienced wind, snow, rain, sleet and now sunshine and warmth. It just blows my mind how the weather can change so quickly and be so powerful so the music theme of the day is weather songs. Enjoy!

ONE YEAR IN NEW YORK CITY

One year ago, I packed my bags, boarded a flight and moved to New York City. I was going way out on a limb in the search of my next great experience. It has been a year of ups & downs and I can tell you with certainty that the 'struggling artist' thing is not nearly as romantic in real life. I've met so many new people, some who are definitely worth keeping around for a long time and others who make me thankful that this city is so big I may never have to see them again. One of my friends here told me that the first year is the hardest, and I believe her. Despite the rough adjustment, I love my new city. There is never a shortage of inspiration and I am looking forward to another year in the Big Apple.

Still no snow here in NYC, even though everywhere else seems to be getting plenty of the white stuff. If I take my cues from the wildlife (what little of it there may be) I can guess that we won't be getting much, if any, snow... ever. While it is certainly colder, I see geese and ducks and other animals that usually hightail it south for the winter still hanging about. Maybe thats how it always is here. This, after all, will be my first full winter in the city. It will officially be my 1 year NYC anniversary this weekend. Does that mean I get to call myself a New Yorker now? Maybe I will do a New York City tribute post on Monday... sounds good to me!

I am shocked beyond belief that I haven't yet shared the work of one of my favorite sculptors, Tara Donovan! Her medium is mundane objects, ones often bought on a impulse and thrown away just as quickly such as the Styrofoam cups in the image above. She gives these materials meticulous care and constructs structures of other-worldly beauty that fill or interact with the surrounding space.

Who would have thought such stunning sculptures could be made with buttons, toothpicks, pins, and shattered glass, paper plates and Mylar [images below, in order]. Seeing her "Untitled" Mylar piece at the Pace Gallery on 22nd St. in Chelsea (which is a jaw-dropping space, by the way, a far cry from your typical boring "white cube") was breathtaking experience. I wish I could have crawled inside it and spent the afternoon mesmerized by the gravity and intricacies of the work.

SKETCHBOOK PROJECT 2012-- the unused photographs

So I am bit behind where I wanted to be on my sketchbook project which is due to be shipped out at the end of the month. I am waiting on the wintergreen oil I will be using for the xerox photo transfers. It was a supply that was surprisingly hard to find.

The photographs themselves were also tricky to get my hands on. In my previous post about the project I shared photographs from my mother's side of the family. This time its my father's side and the photos go further back to my Grandmother's childhood (bottom) and some of my grandfather during WWII in his army uniform with the rest of his immediate family. Some of the people in photographs I recognize while many leave me wondering. Parts of my family I have never know. A piece of my lineage now lost in mystery.

These photographs are a few of the ones I have chosen to not include in my sketchbook, even though I find them fascinating. Unfortunately, I there are so many front facing group shots that I just had to cut a few, but they were too wonderful not to share. You will see more when I get the wintergreen oil (at last) and the project is complete. What a journey!

Oh, I wonder what it would be like to spend just 5 minutes inside the mind of British illustrator Sandra Dieckmann! She's a woman of the wild and a kindred spirit with what appears to be a similar obsession with bears (I used a lot of self control not including her lovely bears in this post). Her work, which feels something like contemporary folk art, employs so many mediums, whether colored pencil or watercolor, graphite or digital. It's visual storytelling for a modern world that misses the traditions of its past.

HAVE A CREATIVE WEEKEND

Its finally starting to feel like January even though we still have no snow. I think the cold weather is a nice excuse to spend the day in the studio making art. The other day I had a mad case of painters-block. It was so frustrating, but I was determined to make something. So, I decided to make a color mixing template like we had to do in beginner painting classes. It was almost meditative, the pattern, the mixing, the colors. Opened my mind right up and I've been on a roll for the last few days putting the finishing touches on my sketchbook project. The wonderful things a little color mixing can do.

It's a rainy day here in New York. While some may curl up with a book, or a movie, I am drawn to these watercolors works by Bauhaus painter Paul Klee like an old friend. These pieces remind me of the geometry of the city, the dark, misty rain and the brightly colored lights and signs. I don't think the Swiss-German artist ever saw New York City but today his work is the perfect compliment to these foggy streets. That's wonder of abstract art.

I am in love with these out of the ordinary pieces by Brooklyn based artist Grady McFerrin. His work is an amalgamation of neutral and neon, textile and old world symbolism.He's done work for some of my favorite bands along with well-known publications like the NYTimes Book Review.

I remember in my early art classes how professors would chide us for creating works that were "too centered," claiming they were "boring." That may be true for the junk most of us were making back in Drawing 103 but Grady McFerrin's centric works are anything but boring. Each work creates a whirling, focused interest, turning what could be a chaotic collection of images, colors and textures into a beautiful balancing act. Decidedly, not boring.

SOME TIME AT HOME

Well, I've been out of the NY for a week or so, visiting my family in Wisconsin. A bit late for the holidays but better than never, I guess. It's been a good trip and I've loved seeing all the people I miss so much. Yesterday the weather was so nice, not at all typical for a January in the Midwest, Matt and I went for a long, sunny walk along Lake Michigan and it was absolutely beautiful. It's been so pleasant to take a break from crazy, hectic day to day. I hope you find time this weekend to take a break and breathe too.

When I first saw these I didn't recognize that they were actually paintings, in fact I still don't entirely believe my eyes with how perfectly rendered these are. Carly Waito has a gift for not only conveying these precious gems or minerals accurately but also imparts a sort of energy within each stone.

This past year has been both an thrilling adventure and continuous struggle. I am so excited for the new year and a fresh start and to be in a more positive place. 2011 has taught be a lot and I happy to say that the struggles have helped motivate me to chase after my dreams without compromise. My resolution is to go at 2012 with gusto and to never give up. Whats yours?

I recently discovered Studio Morran after encountering the Morran Book Project, a multi-artist illustrative tribute to Morran, who was a very inspirational pup before his recent passing. Morran's owner is the extremely talented illustrator Camilla Engman whose work involved nature, storytelling and a touch of whimsy. I absolutely love her forrest poster series.

It's almost here! For those of you who celebrate it, do you remember that feeling you would get as a child on Christmas morning? With all the giddy excitement it was a wonder anyone could fall asleep on Christmas Eve. Still when the morning comes, we would burst out of our rooms and race down the hall to that glowing tree. I'm pretty sure my 22 year-old brother still wakes up before dawn on Christmas Day. You really are never too old to feel the joy that the Holidays bring. Whatever you celebrate, I hope you have a joyous and festive weekend.

Quite a few of my pieces recently have been word focused, like these new works in the shop. Putting words visually is challenging but so rewarding when it work out right. Ben Skinner is truly an expert at this. His words tell much and yet nothing about a story, the typography is spot on and his use of materials is really exciting from glitter to watercolor to rainbow sprinkles. All this makes his work fun, mysterious and tragic.

Geometric, colorful, dark and moody. Oh how I am in love with the work of Shannon Finley. His paintings are insanely inspiring and I just can't stop looking at them to get lost in their hypnotic structure. I'm also impressed by their size. With sides at about 15 inches, Shannon doesn't fall into the the "bigger is always better" trap. Now if you excuse me, I have some staring to do.

A few months ago I was obsessed with Tabitha Bianca Brown of The Pair of Birds and her Amethyst Print. Her work continues to delight me in many different ways. I love the wood grain texture, the brilliant use of color and how her pieces can be so diametrically different but still share a deep connection. That and each illustration is so beautiful.

It's prints like these that really make me miss the good ol' press-bed. The color structure-based pieces by Laura Berman really hit spot today. Between the layering, shape and color, they are simply fantastic. Laura, who teaches printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute, is inspired by her 200+ rock collection. Yup, rock collections are awesome.

sketchbook project 2012 --family lineage

I've been thinking a lot about my sketchbook for the Art House Co-Op's Sketchbook Project, and I'm realizing that before I know it I will have to send it in. Time is of the essence. So I started thinking about time and my theme, along the line. My family history came to mind and I thought it would be awesome to do some combination photo transfers, watercolor and pen and ink drawing/writing. I will be sure to give a tutorial on the nontoxic photo transfer technique I use when I get there.

Here are just a few of the photos I'm considering using from my mom's side of the family. She had four brothers and one sister and they lived in a three bedroom house on a farm just outside Little Rock. My grandparents still live there and seeing the house in the background, it's like it has never changed.

For the last few months, I feel like I've been bumping in to Ana Montiel's colorful illustrations all over the place but never with enough time for me to get really intimate with her work. But this past weekend, I saw a vimeo for her artist book Visual Mantras and it took my breath away. I have been working on some pieces recently which are inspired by the geometry of ice crystals in snowflakes (you can sneak a peak at one of them on the wall in the picture of my workspace from my last post) and some of her pieces speak to me in the same way. It always feels good to find a artist whose work brings harmony to your soul.

P.S. I totally want Visual Mantras for Christmas. ;)

For those of you who don't know, when I moved to New York City from Wisconsin almost a year ago, I came with a suitcase and just $200 in my bank account. I was lucky that my boyfriend of 4 years, Matt had been living in the city for a few months at that point so I wasn't without a place to live or a friend. It has taken a lot of working, saving and planning to get a quality space to work in. It's still a work in progress but its has come so far. And I couldn't be happier!

How rad are these paintings by Portland artist Mark Warren Jacques? The colors, the shapes, the intricacy... wow. They are geometric and organic, representational and abstract, light and dark. I love how he can just tip-toe the line between these "labels" we have made and make some truly original work. There's symbolism in the moons, pyramids and branches which just makes each piece more interesting to view as you puzzle out a meaning. Really inspiring stuff, folks!

Local Love: McNally Jackson

It's been far too long since I've posted a local love and it's about time I share with you my favorite independent bookshop in NYC, McNally Jackson. I started working in SoHo recently so I'm closer to McNally Jackson than ever and I love stopping by whenever I can.

On Prince Street, tucked between Lafayette and Mulberry, this bookshop is both modern and cozy, complete with 2 floors of books and a cafe. It's laid out in sort of a travel bookshop style, by country, kind of like another local love Daunt Bookshop in London. I've found books here I've never seen other places like Letters to a Young Artist from the defunct magazine Art on Paper.

Another super cool thing about McNally Jackson is its Book Machine for self-publishing your own paperbacks, they will even sell it in their shop. I just think that is so rad. They also have tons of events. I've had my on joining their Art and Beauty book club if I could just squeeze it in my schedule. Good thing I can just stop stop by McNally Jackson after work now, I am so excited to spend more time at this awesome bookshop.

"I'm in love with you" by Francesca Capellini

I've been seeing some amazing photo-collage pieces recently and it has really inspired me to see what type of art I can make utilizing collage. These are just a few of my favorites that that I've seen recently. I love how they can be both vintage felling and aged as well a vibrant and surreal. Collage is great technique for storytelling and each of these pieces does that.

That's why I am eagerly awaiting a package in the mail. My parents have been saving National Geographic at least since the late 70's and some of them are coming my way for collage material. I'll share my explorations with this new method very soon, until then why not enjoy these beauties by some very talented artists.

I hope everyone had a wonderful, gratitude and joy filled thanksgiving yesterday. What a great time to be thankful for all the things we have instead of dwelling on things with "want." This was Matt and I second Thanksgiving on our own, although it felt more like the first. Last year we were in London for thanksgiving roaming the streets trying to find a restaurant that would have "thanksgiving-ish" food. We ended up at a pub near trafalgar square eating Shepard's Pie. Close enough.

This thanksgiving, because of work, I couldn't go visit my extended family in Arkansas so Matt and I made our own meal here in New York. It was so delicious, but we overestimated how much we could eat as two people. Isn't that sort of a thanksgiving tradition too? We also saw the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in real life! After so many years of watching on TV it was really cool to see up close. All in all a great day with the guy I love.

As autumn wanes, I find myself drawn to works like the photography of Oliver Morris. Art that is saturated with earthy hues of the season that leaves us too fast. You can almost smell the wet leaves and dusty earth. I love how each of his double exposures tell a story. The effect is hauntingly beautiful.

The never-ending gray of winter is starting to linger over NYC and I am not too thrilled about it. Can you tell that winter isn't my favorite season? To me it's just so... blah. Add to that the fact that I've never been good at winter sports, since my balance is less than perfect. So, unfortunately, winter is mostly inside time and I'm an outside kinda girl. It's a real problem.

Anyway, I guess it's sort of fitting since I'm terribly swamped with work (Who would have thought that would happen when you have 4 jobs?) and the weather certainly won't be tempting me away. At least winter is hot chocolate season. That's definitely something I can get behind.

Today I am inspired by the pairing of bright colors and nature in the photography of David Benjamin Sherry. The non-native color in these landscapes blow my mind. It dramatically changes the mood of the photography. What could have been a peaceful, foggy morning in the forest turns into a strange, multicolored alien land, majestic, serene mountains become murder red peaks and snowy trees are growing beacons. Sherry's work is a great example of how color can alter our perceptions and elicit an emotional response. That and they are just gorgeous!

Something moves inside me when I view the work of San Fransisco artist Lisa Congdon. Her colors are muted though vibrant and the subject matter is wide ranging, connected together by her distinct illustrative style. The other thing that I like about Lisa's work is a bit harder to pin down. Best I can do to describe it is that her work doesn't try to hard. It's complex where it needs to be and simple everywhere else. Lovely illustration like hers totally make my day.

SF Girl by the Bay visited Lisa Congdon at her studio and took some wonderful pictures. Sigh, to have a studio space...

running to the weekend

This week, a combo of daylight savings time and mother nature forced me to start running in the morning before work. Monday... didn't work. I woke up but just said "no way" and went back to bed. Great start right? Tuesday went so much better though. I got up, and ready and out the door to be greeted by a surprisingly warm and sunny morning. Wednesday was foggy but still lovely. And Thursday and today went by without a hit of the snooze button.

One thing I have found on these morning runs is the light is AMAZING. Nearly everyday, I've had to stop to take a photo. Whether its shadows playing across a building of teal and sand or boat on the foggy East River (the photo above) my mornings have just gotten a lot more beautiful. What great motivation to get up and go.

Speaking of get up and go, next week I will start rolling out some prints on my etsy shop. I am super excited and I hope you are too. Be sure to check back next week.

I am fascinated by the color combinations found in these prints by Australian artist Ella Dreyfus. Most of her work is black and white photography so this series entitled, "To See Beyond What Seems to Be" is truly special. There are simply so many things I love about these prints; the layers, uneven edges, the color interactions and the nod to typography. They make me want to experiment with more unique color pairings in my own work.

Yesterday was the New York City ING Marathon, and the city went crazy. In a good way. I had always heard that the Marathon was big deal but I never really understood how big. It was inspirational and funny and exhausting (for the volunteers and the participates) and all around amazing. Certainly made me want to step my running game up and go for it next year. Or at least the half Marathon in March.

There were so many interesting people that I saw running yesterday but one of the most unique approached to 26.2 miles was Christoph Niemann, who ran and illustrated his experience... AT THE SAME TIME. He has a column in the NYT Magazine called Abstract Sunday and you could follow his marathon progress yesterday on twitter. How awesome is that?! Here are a few of my favorites from yesterday but you should definitely check out the rest as well as Christoph's "standing still" illustrations.

"often times, it's the little things i miss the most"

I tell you what, I am so glad this week is over. It was one of those "go-go-go, come home late from work and get less sleep than you should while try to keep your sanity" kind of weeks. The weekend is such a relief and I intend to make the most of it. Sleeping in, not cleaning the apartment (unless I want to), making beautiful things, frolicking in the park. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend as well!

Since I have been working with more water-based pigments, I have become fascinated with the moment the brush hits the water and the colors dance through the liquid. It's so artful in itself. So when I found these pieces by Alberto Seveso in his Disastro Ecologico series I was glad someone had the genius and skill to capture that beauty.

These photographs also touch on something I work with in my own art which is happenstance and things beyond our control. I love how the ink sometimes looks like cloth, or a ghost or the outside of a bubble. They are absolutely stunning and it is what I am inspired by today.

A few years ago, while I was working on my senior show, I had the amazing opportunity to take some photos with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) on campus. I eagerly gathered natural objects like flowers, leaves, moss and grass to get a glimpse of what I could not yet see. Those pictures still provide me with endless inspiration. It seems like each time I look at them I find a new element that had previously gone unnoticed. Even now, ideas are brewing.

The weekend is here at last! Matt and I had plans to go apple picking at an orchard just outside the city but the weather for tomorrow in NY looks like a wintry mix of terrible. Yeah, you heard me right... "wintry" as in snow.

Is fall over already? Did I miss it?

I am so not ready for winter. I feel like I still am holding on to bits of summer by my fingertips and I haven't done nearly enough to celebrate autumn. I think I need a weekend out of the city to really appreciate the season. Go to a lake and skip stones as a crisp fall wind pulls the leaves from their branches.

How amazing is the work of Joanna Goss?! I just can't get enough. Between the medley of shapes fitting together like a mosaic but with the lightest wash of color, I can't decide which piece is my favorite. I am always in awe of artists who can make strange colors fit together and Joanna does just that. She even utilizes a hint of pattern within her floating shapes, bringing to mind quilts and rolling landscapes.

There is something soothing about making art. Even if the art itself isn't soothing I think that feeling is mostly universal. The work I am making right now certainly does that for me during a time of questions and changes and so many more questions. After some introspection, I've com to think that is why I make art the way I do. Life throws things as us, good and bad and we make what we can out of what we are given.

When I worked with press instead of just paints and pen, my methods were largely the same as they are now. In the beginning, I love to allow colors to interact freely with as little of control as I can manage. What is created is mostly happenstance. Afterward, I go into the chaos and add structure, focus and connectivity. How to bring those things into the piece is sort of like a problem to solve. I guess it makes sense then why art making has helped me so much over the past few months. It's a microcosm of the larger picture. Taking the random unknown and making something beautiful.

I am in the full swing of creating some new work and it feels so good. I feel like I am finally coming into my own and figuring out what I want my work to look like. It was really tough to loose the space and equipment I could use in college but where I am right now is so nice and freeing in a way.

I has really helped to make a list of what my work has been and what I want it to be. To find the things I have always been attracted to and to see how I can make that the connection between all the work I make. My list goes something like this: colorful, clean, spontaneous, inspired, movement. There's more but I don't want to give it all away.

I came across the work of artist Linda Geary, I was floored by her use of color and line. It's like she gives her work space and time to breath. I also love the mix of solid blocks and airy lines. It's a lovely tug and pull that I feel with every piece of art she makes.

Right now the "studio" in Brown Bear Studio more aspirational than realistic since technically I don't even have a desk, much less a studio. A girl can dream though and hopefully I will be able to get a proper workspace real soon. Until then I have a small obsession with looking at the photos of other peoples' studios and that I guess will have to tide me over... for now.

The Sketchbook Project 2012!!

I went to the mailbox today to find my sketchbook for Art House Co-Op's Sketchbook Project 2012! For those of you who aren't familiar with the Sketchbook Project, its an opportunity for people of all artistic skill levels to participate in creating a sketchbook (with or without your chosen theme) that will tour several N. American locations and eventually become a part of the Brooklyn Art Library's permanent collection. at just $25 a pop, you get a blank sketchbook, with a bar code on it. Once you mail it in, you get a message anytime someone looks through it as it travels the world.

Last year was fun and crazy as I tried my best working on it while I was studying abroad in London. My theme was If you lived here... which I thought was very fitting. My theme this year is Along the Line and I am just all aflutter with possibilities. Right now it is just full of blank pages but looking through the digital archives at Art House Co-Op's website is giving me all kinds of fun ideas.

As I fill up these blank pages I will be sure to let you all in on my ideas and hopefully when the tour comes around to your neck of the wood you will stop by and check it out.

It's been too long, my friends! Thanks for being patient while I figure out life and what not. So as you can see the blog has changed a bit as will the content. I'm planning on posting more about my personal process and work, along with all the other things I've posted in the past. Fashion will be taking a backseat, though. What can I say its tough hunting down awesome styles when you don't have the funds to buy any of it.

The latest print in Matt and I's home collection is this wonderful piece entitled "Tree of Life." What seems like a simple cross-section of a tree trunk is, in fact, hundreds of animals walking in precession. Brilliant!

If you are in the NYC area and don't have to watch the Packer game on Sunday, you should check out this open house at JFK International for architect Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal. Its supposed to be one of his masterpieces and its been closed to the public for decades.

Moody, atmospheric and vibrant, the work of Russian-American artist Jules Olitski. I can easily get lost in each of these pieces. It doesn't surprise me at all that at his peak in 1969, Olitski was the first living artist to be given a solo show at the Met in NYC. I am officially on a hunt to see these works in person so I can stare at them for hours.

Normally I don't buy this kind of thing but today has been a day of missteps starting with Blogger not working in the morning so this post is later that normal. There are a very few things I am superstitious about. I don't like saying the absolute worse case scenerio for things because I worry about it happening. Or sometimes saying the best case scenario because I worry it won't happen. And maybe I knock on wood ever now and then. Do you have any superstitions?

I must admit that in art school I was not the biggest fan of Rothko. After all there was no way my professors would let me get away with putting just 2+ colors on a canvas and calling it a day. But I have grown to appreciate the beautiful pairings, masterful color mixing and the peaceful genius that is the work of Mark Rothko. I find that while deciding what colors to wear for the day that asking "what would Rothko do?" yields some stunning results.

Camp Eagle Ridge

Happy Friday everyone! Lets take a moment out of our regularly scheduled blog post so I can tell you about a really cool place. Camp Eagle Ridge is a boys and girls summer camp in Mellen, WI and since I was 9 years old I've spent my summers there, whether as a camper, CIT/JC or a counselor. It's that time of year again where if you haven't signed your kid up for summer camp yet (and you definitely should) you will most likely be looking for the best summer camp ever. Well search is over... send your kids aged 7-17 to Camp Eagle Ridge.

Speaking not as a counselor, but as a past camper I can say that neither school nor sports nor other extra curriculars have taught me more meaningful lessons than just a week at CER. I met kids from all over the country and world. I learned skills that help me to this vary day and I've made some of my most lasting friendships there. It's been a huge part of my life and I know countless other people my age or kids that I've worked with as counselor who will say the same thing. I truly believe it is something above and beyond the normal camp experience. (which is already amazing anyway)

Last summer was my last summer at CER, but the lessons I learned there have helped as I move to pursue my dreams and goals. I hope you will consider giving your child (now or when they are old enough) the outstanding experience of Camp Eagle Ridge. Honestly I could go on forever, but that won't be able to convey my truest, deepest emotions about this place I hold so very dear. It's is place of laughter and love. What better place could you send your child?

I've shared with all of you artists from my undergrad before. Jamie Lea Bertsch, Travis Lester etc. they all graduated before me, so obviously I looked up to them. Nikki Schwontkowski on the other hand was a level below me, but her work is so phenomenal you can't help but admire her and her artwork. Nikki just opened her senior show, (remember the show that took over my life around this time last year? the same.) and she has some great new pieces that blow my mind. Look out for this girl. I see great things in her future.

Local Love: Levain Bakery NYC

Little known fact, I will never turn down a cookie. I love them. So when my friend Michelle took Matt and I to Levain Bakery on 74th St. just west of Central Park, I was pumped. I had heard some great things about this place and I must say I was not disappointed.

Like nearly every good thing in NYC you have to wait in line, but lucky today the line was short and the cookies were right out of the oven. We each got a different one so we could try them all and I must say my absolute favorite was the dark chocolate peanut butter cup. Mmm.

Every cookie was gooey and wonderful. We even saved one for the next day and it was still moist and delicious which is very impressive by cookie standards. So if you get a chance, get in line and enjoy one or all of the yummy cookies Levain Bakery has to offer. Then walk over to the Park and enjoy.

Wow, this girl is a rockstar. NYC based illustrator Marion Bolognesi has some seriously beautiful work that explodes with both color and sex-appeal. It's like illustration eye candy. Bolognesi is also an accessory designer with a BFA, which makes me feel loads better about not having an MFA right now. On the other hand it makes me feel like I better get back to work.

The boldness of American minimalist and conceptual artist Sol LeWitt is something often desired in a fashion print. His colors and striking lines are so entrancing, I would have trouble taking my eyes of myself if I was wearing something that seemed LeWitt inspired. They are perfect for summer.

Spring, spring, spring! I love how everyone freaks out about spring. Like we have never seen flowers before or felt the sun on our skins. Winter certainly makes me feel that way. My weekend plans now consist of reading in the park while spying on cute pups in the dog park. Sounds like absolute heaven.

Since I've started my new internship, I've come across some stunning work by a huge variety of artists from all around the world. It's a happy coincidence and not technically part of my job but I always keep a post-it handy and fill it with artist names as the day goes by. Its been harder than usual to choose which artists to showcase here but I am excited to start.

I fell in love with Shahzia Sikander's work at first sight. Each piece is like a flurry of cultures, harmonious yet chaotic and always beautiful. In bit of each work I see a piece of pattern borrowed from an ancient tapestry or yesterday's picnic blanket. Contrasting parts from opposite sides of the world combine to make some gorgeous contemporary art.

Bike Love

Before traveling to London and subsequently moving to NYC, I had a wonderful bicycle named Jazz. She had two back-side baskets for groceries and stuff and a rearview mirror, which was awesome. She was a eighties child, black with crazy colors and the first bike I bought on my own. I donated Jazz to Camp Eagle Ridge last summer and now that spring has sprung I feel the need to ride again. Someday.

Not having any space in my tiny manhattan apartment has not stopped me from looking at home design inspiration (In fact thats sort of part of my internship). One thing I keep coming back to and drooling over is mixed textile and random patterns together. It's quirky and in small doses give a room a boring little room a whole lot of personality.

There is a vulnerability and a sweet eroticism to the work of photographyer, Carla van de Puttelaar. Her models are white as porcelain and seem just as breakable. There is a humanity to each of her subjects, you get a glimpse at their personality. I also feel a sadness when I look at these but art makes people react in different ways. She lives and works in Amsterdam.

This is one of those ideas that make me slap my head and say, "why didn't I think of that?!" Since February 5th, 2006, Kate Bingaman has been drawing something she purchased each day, from q-tips to netflix. On her series entitled Obsessive Consumption, Kate says, "Our daily lives are filled with consumption...parking tickets, coffee, packs of gum, shoes, electricity bills and burritos...everything we buy has its own story to tell. " Her illustration style tells this story in a fun and playful way sometimes rejoicing in the purchase, other times not so much.

The ongoing tragedy in Japan has affected many people around the world. I feel lucky to know that my friends in Japan are safe, but so many are not. Help is desperately needed and it is needed now. Today instead of giving you fun links for the weekend, I will be giving you links to ways to help Japan in their time of need.

What you can do:

While texting your donations to the Red Cross or other organizations is great, there is some question as to whether the funds will get there fast enough. Some phone companies are withholding funds for months and Japan needs support now. I recommend just donating on the Red Cross website here. Or Direct Relief International here. And even though you cannot specify that the money go to Japan, Doctors Without Borders is already doing some great work in Japan and you can donate here.

New York based, Japanese artist Tomoko Takahashi of TOTA Press is making letterpress cards with 100% of the proceeds donated to the Red Cross.

There is more you can do besides simply giving you money. Hope Letters is an organization that sends your letters of inspiration and support to places where disaster has struck. You can help by either sending a letter to the survivors and relief workers in Japan or by translating others' letters into Japanese (If you know Japanese that is).

For anyone in the New York City area there is this fundraising event this Saturday and I am sure there are others all over the world.

Oh and lets not forget the animals of Japan who are also in need of help. You can donate to help them here.

If you know of any other ways to assist the people of Japan, feel free to share.

Artsy post coming to you this week from a fellow Pointer, Steve Seeley. I wasn't lucky enough to be a student when he was but I was introduced to his work while at UWSP. Seeley's series called the Delicate Matter depicts animals as saint-like iconic figures. Halos and rainbows and nature telling secrets; there's a symbolism to Seeley's work that stays with me and makes me wonder about the world he has created, is it heaven or something else?

A Creative Life: Anna Liesemeyer

So as many people can attest to, life after graduation is not easy especially if the life you want to lead is a creative one. Its hard to find a way to pay the bills, feel fulfillment and still do what you love. Recently this has been my struggle, so I reached out to Anna from In Honor of Design to share her story as I hope to do again with other creative people who inspire me. The lesson I hope this teaches (and I hope I learn) is that the road is not straight, it's steep and sometimes the weather sucks, but in the end living a creative life is all worth it.

When did you first understand that you wanted to lead a creative life and make that your career?

I have loved art and creating since I was a little girl, but never thought it could go beyond a hobby so I started my major in education. It wasn't until my boyfriend at the time (now husband) suggested that I switch to art studio and pursue my passions that it clicked for me. I actually could do that? I just needed a little encouragement:) Since then I have had some great opportunities open up for me and I just run through every door!

What steps (and mis-steps) got you to where you are today?

It has been quite a whirlwind in the last few years. I had to narrow down what I really wanted to do because so many artistic avenues seemed appealing. For instance, I worked as a web-design intern which made me realize I like graphic design, but not coding and web design. Also, when I started my business, my first craft fair was little miss accessories and paper goods! Now I am really only doing ladies accessories. It takes some trial and error to see what works for you, what you really love to do, and what avenues will be most beneficial.

As far as taking some good steps, I just really went full force ahead and worked hard to make my branding all congruent. I started blogging about the same time as I started my etsy shop. I took advantage of social media and started a fan page, twitter account, etc. My first sales came from friends, but as my business grew to sustain itself without advertising, social networking really helped spread the word. I feel like I am still learning and evolving my business each day. Its kind of an on going process - but that's what makes it fun:)

Was there ever a time when you considered throwing in the towel and keeping your creativity as "just a hobby"? What made you keep going?

Oh definately.....usually after a late night with a daunting To-do list, and profit seemed slim. However, I never lost the conviction that I had something going that could be successful, so I kept plugging.

How do you find inspiration/ the time to create while living the life of a mother and wife?

Well, I would say it kind of goes hand in hand. Being a mother and wife kind of opened my eyes to see the world in a different more positive light. I see inspiration and creativity in many more corners of the world than I used to:) I use nap time, early mornings, and weekends to dive into my creative work. I gather so much inspiration from other bloggers and artists alike. I think its important to plug into a community of some sort which can help spark your creativity when you are in a stump, and encourage you when you are feeling discouraged.

Who motivated/supported you the most to keep doing the things you love?

Hands down my husband. It amazes me how encouraging and supportive he is with all my little ventures. I think ultimately he sees how it makes me happy and he has always looked out for the best for me. Having his love and support has done wonders for my creative journey.

How does it feel getting to do what you love for a living?

Its freaking fantastic!! I would be lying if I said it wasn't difficult at times, but really, I count my blessings every day. I wanted to be able to be at home with my kids, and to be able to do something with all my creative energy. I get to do both those things, so I wouldn't change anything!

What more do you still want to accomplish?

I hope to expand my business to be able to work with one of my sisters one day. They are all so creative and I would love to work with them!

Any advice you have for someone who is just starting their journey?

There will always seem to be someone else doing it bigger and better, but the best thing to do is focus on taking your dreams one step at a time to the best of your abilities and you will be more likely to achieve them! Each person has talents and gifts to offer that no one else has. It just takes finding your niche and running with it!

I was so excited the first time I "wondered in" to illustrator Ashley G(oldberg)'s etsy shop. She created characters with a sense of whimsy and a dark wonder. Plus she seems to share my affinity for a good beard. Can't go wrong there. Ashley says "...although these creatures [that I draw] were elusive and shy, they always decided to befriend me. Over the years, my creatures have become decidedly more design-driven, put a part of me is still just drawing little friends to have." She lives in Portland with her 'creative partner in crime' Drew and it seems he has a beard.

With spring fast approaching (not fast enough I say) I've been been seeing a lot of dots in addition to the stripes that are so in fashion right now. Dots always make me think of the American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. He used old-fashion comic strip as inspiration for his visuals and employed a method known as ben-day dots to create a mix of color similar to pointillism. His work is tongue-in-cheek and absolutely wonderful.

What a crazy week it has been. A roller coaster of emotions, let's say. One of the ups has been getting an internship down in the financial district. Now I can see the Statue of Liberty everyday if I want. And Battery Park will be so nice come spring. The downs of the week, well, we just won't dwell on those, I'm just happy to start the weekend on an up note.
